Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, NYC
This ruin is on Roosevelt Island, on the East river, between Manhattan and Queens. in 1856, a hospital opened there and was used to treat and quarantine people infected with smallpox.  Outbreaks had occurred frequently in New York City, and this small 100 bed hospital played an important role in containing the disease until it was finally wiped out.  The building was later turned into a nursing school until it finally closed in the 1950s, about a hundred years after it first opened it’s doors.
